March’s whiskey tasting saw the Waterford Whiskey Society return to Revolution Whiskey Bar to host Eoin Kearney from the Glendalough Distillery. Eoin took us through the inspiration behind the branding of Glendalough whiskey, about the man himself on the bottle St Kevin who founded the monastic settlement in Glendalough in the 6th century from where the first distilled drinks were thought up and the significance of the numbers 7 and 13 (which have become their signature years for their whiskey releases). Seven was the number of years he lived off the land and the number of churches he built in Glendalough and thirteen in honour of our very own Brian O’Driscoll, Irish rugby player and whiskey lover.
Eoin brought with him six of the latest Glendalough releases for us to taste: Single Grain Double Barrell, Single Grain Triple Barrel, Single Malt 7yr Porter Cask, Single Malt 13yr Japanese Mizunara Cask, Single Cask Burgundy Single Grain and the Single Cask Calvados Single Grain. To make the night extra special, Eoin treated us to the first tasting of Glendalough’s very own Pot Still finished in Irish oak, a real privilege for our whiskey society.
The voting of the favourite whiskey of the night was a very mixed reaction with the Single Malt 7yr Porter Cask just easing ahead of the rest. As always a great night was had by all and we look forward to seeing what is coming up for our April tasting.
